| DIGITAL LEARNING DAY - Tuesday, February 07, 2012The numbers tell the story.
Two million students, 18,000 teachers, 36 states plus the District of Columbia, 26 national organizations, 24 companies, and 16 state governors joined forces on-line last week to celebrate the first ever National Digital Learning Day.
Their message was clear: Digital technology powers learning.

| NATIONAL SCHOOL COUNSELING WEEK - Monday, February 06, 2012U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan issued the following statement today, recognizing National School Counseling Week, Feb. 6-10, 2012.
I want to salute the thousands of professionals across the country engaged in school counseling. Every day, these unsung heroes in American education help millions of students sidestep the roadblocks of life. They help them succeed, achieve their dreams, reach their potential, explore their curiosity and more.
In today's knowledge economy, when earning an advanced degree has never been more important, counselors play a critical role in preparing our students for higher education. Every day, counselors in schools across the country help guide millions of students to graduation and ensure that they are taking the necessary steps to go to college, from choosing a school to preparing financial aid forms and securing scholarships. Their guidance empowers our children to reach their fullest potential, and their work will help us move closer to achieving the President's goal of leading the world in college graduates by 2020. |
| RURAL EDUCATOR TITLED A "CHAMPION OF CHANGE" - Wednesday, February 01, 2012
In 2005 when I first began working with the Alamance-Burlington School System in North Carolina to start a college access and career awareness program, “What’s After High School?,” this quote in the office at Eastern Alamance High School caught my attention and I wrote it down:
Perhaps the most valuable result of all education is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do, when it ought to be done, whether you like it or not. This is the first lesson to be learned. — Thomas Huxley
Later I thought to myself, “that’s really what college access is… teaching young people about the world and opportunities beyond where they live, showing them how a college education can help them realize those opportunities and equipping them with the tools and resources to do what they ‘have to do, when it ought to be done, whether (they) like it or not’…”

| NEW ACCREDITATION STANDARDS GO INTO EFFECT MARCH 1, 2012 - Thursday, January 26, 2012New standards for accreditation are set to begin March 1, 2012. These changes line up with adjustments required to clear the process of recognition with the US Department of Education. While the cost of the accreditation application will remain the same, there will be new fees associated with the new standards that schools will need to plan for. Some of those standards will require a national standardized test be administered to the student body, teachers and administrators will need to meet NAPHS licensure requirements and several school improvement measures have been included. The director is pleased with the adjustments. He stated, "A quality school is not one that just operates smoothly but one that produces excellent results. With our new accreditation process, these results are evaluted to ensure that the institution is providing the best quality education to the public. I believe our member school administrators will be pleased with these changes. We don't want to just say we have the best schools, we want to have the evidence to prove it." |
